10 Best Homemade Bongs
Every cannabis user has been there: out-and-about or otherwise unprepared, caught bong-less at the most crucial of times.
It is here that true genius may shine through as Marijuana MacGyvers reveal themselves to be the resourceful, gifted ganja connoisseurs they really are. Everybody has probably made a pipe out of an apple at some point (or, maybe, an aluminum can – which can’t be good for your health) which is a great method in a pinch. But others have engineered smoking solutions that would make Rube Goldberg proud – using objects the rest of the world would never consider to make homemade bongs and pipes.
Thankfully, many cannabis creatives have shared their homemade paraphernalia on the internet. We’ve collected 10 of the most creative (and craziest) DIY bongs and pipes, hopefully to inspire more endo engineers to even higher levels of greatness.
10. Honey Bear Bong
Those iconic honey bear containers can be easily made into a makeshift pipe. You’ll have to empty out all the honey first, of course – so some people suggest just buying a never-been-filled bear since sticky honey is hard to clean out. Honey bear bongs are such a tried-and-true DIY method that Brad Pitt used one in a Quentin Tarantino movie.
9. Jager Bong and Jager Bong Jr.
After your bottle of Jagermeister is bombed out, many folks just save the bottle as a decoration. Why not do something more with it? You can make a homemade bong out of most any glass bottle (see the video below to learn how), but this DIY bong gets serious bonus points in the ingenuity category for using an airplane empty bottle (50 ml) as an extra chamber.
8. Ganja Gourd
If the Halloween spirit hits you, a carved out pumpkin makes an excellent DIY bong. Though similar to an apple pipe, pumpkins are great because they come in different shapes and sizes. From miniatures to huge pumpkins, there’s a ganja gourd waiting to be made for smokers of all tolerances – so find a pumpkin that’s the right size for you, then follow along to the helpful video below.
7. Bamboo Bong
Sturdy and found growing wild in much of the world, or maybe in your carefully cared for home garden, bamboo is a no-brainer material for DIY paraphernalia. The video below shows how to make a bamboo bong; for many folks, the allure of using bamboo is that it can be used to make bongs of (sometimes ridiculously) great heights. For cannabis creatives interested in something smaller, that hits very hard (and very harsh), try your hand at crafting a bamboo steamroller.
6. Tic Tac Bong
“What is this, a bong for ants?” Could be, but it’s also a super easy, super portable, and super awesome DIY bong – plus, with Tic Tacs costing around a buck, it’s very cost effective. Basically, take an empty Tic Tac container, put a little water in it, cut a hole in the side for a bowl piece, and enjoy on the go. Watch the video below to see a Tic Tac Bong in action.
5. Tupperware Bong
When scrambling to make a DIY bong, you need something that is on-hand, easy to modify, and that you won’t miss too much. Everybody has some tupperware at home, it’s cheap, airtight, and won’t be a struggle to cut some holes in. Even better, using the different shapes and sizes of the tupperware you have makes for a fun exercise in DIY Marijuana MacGyver-ing. Check out this thread at Grasscity to get some inspiration.
4. Beer Helmet Bong
Rowdy sports fans were on to something with the beer helmet – sip brews while keeping both hands free for nachos. Cannabis users can create their own version for hands-free enjoyment by creating their own beer helmet bong, which uses two cannisters instead of beer cans for the ultimate double-chamber creation. You’ll likely need a friend to light it (both chambers at once!), but if you offer to switch off rounds using the helmet, you’ll find some willing participants.
3. NES Zapper Pipe
Some might call this desecrating a cherished childhood toy – we think it’s an upgrade that makes it more practical for today’s day and age. The zapper gun used for Duck Hunt and other games on the original Nintendo Entertainment System can be easily modified to become a homemade pipe that will impress your friends, inspire a trip down memory lane, and soon have you all giggling like that damn dog. Follow these tips to build your own Zapper Gun Pipe.
2. N64 Controller Pipe
Warning: don’t get too excited before attempting to make this awesome N64 controller pipe. Think it through: will I still have enough controllers to play Mario Kart four-player? Yes? Then proceed with the below tutorial from Stoner Tourism, which will show you how to replace the joystick with a bowl piece and create one of the coolest homemade pieces of paraphernalia we’ve ever seen.
1. LEGO Bong
LEGOs challenged you as a kid to build the coolest constructions you can think of. Well, there’s still challenges to be taken head on as an adult, and some resourceful smokers have created the wildest bongs they could imagine using LEGOs. Below, check out the Taj Mahal of LEGO bongs – it’s got a small stash box, lighter holders, and windows that let you see the water bubbling.

Stoner’s Ultimate Guide to Homemade Bongs & Pipes
There is nothing worse than trying to smoke but realizing you have nothing to smoke out of. Every stoner runs into this problem at least once in their lifetime.
There are several reasons for people to create a do it yourself smoking tool. You left your bowl at your friend’s house, whoever was supposed to bring the bowl or bong forgot it, or maybe you simply don’t own a smoking device because it’s too risky to keep around the house.
No matter the reason, there are plenty of household items that can help you get a quick and easy smoking experience with relatively little effort to create them.
Before you go scrounging for an object to smoke out of you need to make sure you have the essentials.
Precautions to Making Your Own Smoking Device at Home
Before we get into the list of these great household smoking items there are few precautions you should know.
Do Not Use Plastic as a Bowl Piece
Do not use a plastic bowl. Plastic melts when lit and can be very toxic if inhaled. In our list we may recommend using plastic to contain the smoke but all pieces that are being used have a metal or non-plastic bowl pack. DO NOT USE PLASTIC.
Be Careful Which Food You Use
We also mention a few food items that are great to use and very common in households. Rotten food is not recommended all of the food we are talking about is ripe. Rotten food turns to mush and can fall apart extremely easily. This can ruin any piece so use food that is hard or ripe.
Use Sturdy Metals and Materials
Flimsy materials are not recommended in general. Use sturdy materials to smoke out of so they do not fall apart and run the risk of having your hot herb spread a flame onto something else.
10 Homemade Bongs & Hand Pipes You Can Make With Household Items
Desperate times call for desperate measures. If you do not have a piece to smoke out of you will have to make due with what you have around you.
Making your own smoking device can be a fun and creative way to enjoy your herb smoking experience.
When it comes to making smoking devices from scratch, the two main types of items to make them out of are:
- Common Household Items
Both can be equally enjoyable and easy to make if done right.
With these household items, you can make some surprisingly cheap and high-quality bongs, bowls, and other smoking devices.
Let’s dive into our step by step guide to making your very own herb smoking devices from home!
1. Apple Bowls
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The tree can then be burned in the apple ;). Apples are great to turn into smoking devices because they taste great and are easy to cut into.
How to Make an Apple Bowl
I’d be lying if I told you that I didn’t almost fall in love with the first Stoner chick I saw make a bowl out of an apple in about 3 minutes back in my party days. I figured it would be cool to learn how to make one, and give me a reason to talk to here/smoke with her.
Find a ripe apple and stab a pencil size object through the top down to the middle but not all the way through. This hole is for the bowl pack.
Take that same pencil and poke a hole in the side of the apple that is perpendicular to the first hole you made. Do not poke this hole all the way through the apple either. These two hole should meet in the middle of the apple. This hole will act as the mouthpiece.
Blow through the holes to make sure they are intertwining as well as to clear any excess apple bits clogging the path up.
Make a third hole in another side of the apple that connects to both pathways. This hole will act like a rush to make sure it’s in a good spot that your finger can reach while you hit it.
Shave off the edge of the top hole to make it bowl-shaped and place your flower in the carved out area.
Light the herb and enjoy the fruity taste in every hit!
This is the easiest way to create a do it yourself smoking device. It can also be done with other fruits and vegetables that are sturdy like POTatoes, cucumbers, and even pomegranates.
2. Starburst Pipe
Although candy may not be great nutritionally speaking, it can be a great household object to turn into a high-quality handmade hand pipe. If you like sweets, then try out this amazing homemade herb pipe.
How to Make a Starburst Hand Pipe
Okay, so this is going to be messy and sticky. Honestly, whoever came up with this was already extremely stoned, or just down on their luck. Either way, you should be prepared for an absolute mess while making this homemade hand pipe. However, it is worth it when you hit something that tastes like a fruit salad.
Take a pack of Starburst and unwrap each individual starburst.
Stack all the Starburst together in the packet besides two.
Stab a skewer through the connected Starburst in order to keep them together. This also creates an air pathway. Stab it all the way through to the other side to create a rush hole at the end.
Stack the two leftover Starburst on top of the lined up Starburst. These will act as your bowl pack.
Poke a hole from the top two Starburst down to the hole originally made from the skewer.
Shape the bowl so it can hold the amount of herb you want to use in the top two Starburst.
The Starburst can also be mashed together and shaped as if it were clay. If you are having a tough time creating this form of the Starburst pipe than soften up the Starburst by heating them up in the microwave for a few seconds and shape them into a regular bowl.
This may be a bit messy and sticky, but in the end, it is a pretty creative and cool way to smoke.
3. Pumpkin Bong
Pumpkins may not be the most common household item but since fall is approaching they may be common to come across. Because of their various shapes and sizes when compared with other foods, pumpkins are great for making homemade smoking devices.
How to Make a Pumpkin Bong
The size and shape differences make each one completely unique, and you get the opportunity to make a bowl pack in them that is relative to their size for being able to include friends in your smoking experience, or packing extra amounts of herbs into your homemade bowl.
The pumpkin bong is the biggest household smoking item on the list.
Find a pumpkin and hollow it out. It does not need to be cleared out as it does for pumpkin carving but you should remove the skin from the walls where the mouthpiece and bowl will go.
Cut a small hole on one side of the pumpkin so a metal nut can be attached and used as the bowl piece. You can also simply carve out a bowl similar to the apple bowl if you do not have a metal nut.
Take a straw or another circular sturdy material and stab in into the pumpkin the side opposite of the bowl piece. This is your mouthpiece. Sockets also work great, as long as they have a wide enough top part to fill with herbs and a skinny enough bottom that will act as a screen so too much herb does not fall through while smoking.
Make a rush hole if needed.
Add water if you prefer. We recommend trying it without water first.
Light it up and enjoy a different kind of pumpkin spice!
4. Waterfall Bong
A waterfall bong is easy to make, and creates a cheap handmade bong that makes for an interesting smoking experience.
How to Make a Waterfall Bong from Home
In order to make this homemade bong, you will need:
- Water bottle
- A socket
These are one of our favorites. They take minimal amounts of herb and produce one gigantic hit.
Burn the center of the bottle cap so the socket can be pushed through. A pencil or something sharp can be used to penetrate it first. Make the hole small enough so the nut is tight against the bottle cap.
Burn a small hole the size of a pencil an inch above the bottom of the bottle.
Pack the nut with herb.
Place your finger over the hole in the water bottle and fill it with water.
Place the cap back on the water bottle.
Light the herb in the cap while releasing your finger from the plugged hole letting the water flow out. The herb will not burn unless the water is released from the bottle. This creates a vacuum for the smoke.
Leave a little bit of water at the bottom of the bottle to make for a cleaner hit once the herb is burned and the bottle is filled with smoke.
Remove the cap and inhale all of the smoke in one hit.
Try to keep in mind that the plastic takes a while to heat up, but then will quickly burn into large holes. It may take a few tries so be prepared with extra water bottles and caps on deck.
Once you have made a few waterfall bongs from home, you will be a master of homemade smoking devices and will be able to whip these babies up in no time.
5. Gravity Bong
A Gravity Bong is very similar to a waterfall in the way it is made but it can be repacked easier. They are also sometimes referred to as G-bongs, mainly because people began making them out of Gatorade bottles. This makeshift handcrafted water pipe may not be pretty, but it gets the job done.
How to Make a Gravity Bong from Household Items
To get started, you will need:
- Liquid Container (water bottle, milk jug, Hawaiian Punch)
- Basin (water container)
The basin can be a variety of objects it just needs to be larger than the liquid container you are using. It can be a bowl, bottle, bucket etc…
Fill the basin with water.
Take your liquid container (water jug, etc…) and burn the center of the bottle cap and push the socket through tightly so it’s snugged to the cap, just as you did with the waterfall bong above.
Cut the bottom off of the container you are using.
Push the bottle into the water-filled basin until it is completely filled with water.
Fill the socket with herb and screw it on to the top of the bottomless bottle.
Light the herb-filled socket as you slowly pull the bottle up from the basin creating the vacuum effect we went over in the waterfall.
Do not take the bottle completely out of the water as the smoke will just release into the air. Once the water almost reaches the bottom of the bottle remove the cap and inhale while pushing the water bottle back down into the basin.
Pushing the water bottle back into the basin forces the smoke to come up through the bottle into your mouth.
This can be difficult and awkward at first but it very easy once you get the hang of it. It provides a big hit and can be refilled in a simple manner.
6. Soda Can Pipe
Don’t have much to work with for foods or plastic? Try this technique to make a super easy to make the homemade smoking device from a can.
How to Make a Bowl Out of a Soda Can
In order to make this bowl, you will need:
- Soda can
- Poker (pin, keys, knife, etc…)
Poke a hole in the side of a can towards the bottom.
Indent the can around the hole making a bowl pack for your herb.
Make a similar hole on the side of the can that will act as a mouthpiece.
Fill the indented area with nug.
Light the herb and inhale through the normal mouthpiece.
This is by far the simplest piece to make on the list. Everyone has cans laying around their house. If you are in a pinch this is a great way to smoke.
7. Pen One-Hitter
Go straight to the junk drawer if you are looking for something to smoke out of. This is best used with a metal pointed pen. Like we said earlier, it is not safe to smoke from plastic so make sure it is metal.
How to Make a One-Hitter Out of a Pen
This handcrafted one-hitter pipe is more like a chillum, but it definitely gets the job done. This is one of the easiest to make homemade smoking devices, and just about everyone has a spare metal pen lying around the house!
What you will need to get started:
- Metal pointed pen
Take the pen completely apart so you are left with just a tube and the pointed metal piece at the bottom of the pen separate.
Place the pointed metal piece back in the pen but the reverse way so it is pointing towards the end making a cone bowl shape.
Fill the metal piece with herb.
Use the bottom of the pen as a mouthpiece
Light the herb and enjoy.
This is a great device for on the go smoking.
8. Toilet Paper Roll Steamroller
This is a great way to smoke using household items that just about anyone will have on hand.
How to Make a Homemade Pipe from a Toilet Paper Roll
What you will need to get started:
- Empty toilet paper or paper towel roll
Make a small bowl-shaped out tinfoil. Make it flat around the edges so the cardboard cannot get lit on fire while hitting it.
Make a hole on the side of the cardboard roll big enough to fit the tinfoil shaped bowl pack. Be sure to make it smaller than needed so you can always expand as needed. It is easy to shape the tinfoil to the hole as needed. Ideally, you want to make this hole more towards the top or bottom of the cardboard roll, and not in the middle, to allow for the most smoke to build up when smoking this homemade steamroller.
Place tinfoil bowl into the cardboard roll.
Place mouth over one end of the roll and hand on the other opening. You want to put your mouth on the end furthest from the tin foil bowl and your hand on the opposite end.
Inhale while lighting the bowl to fill the steamroller with smoke. Take your mouth off and take a deep breath real quickly while the homemade steamroller is filled with smoke.
Inhale the smoke that is now filling your homemade steamroller, and cough your brains out. Repeat if needed. But be careful, these ones can sneak up on you quickly ;).
9. Empty Cigarette
Although not everyone has access to cigarettes in their home they are commonly used as homemade smoking devices. If you have any of these laying around your house they are extremely simple to smoke out of.
How to Roll Up Your Own Cigarettes With Herb
What you will need to get started:
Empty your cigarette.
Fill it with herb. Add some of the herb you took out of the cigarette if you are feeling classy.
Smoke your homemade one-hitter and enjoy your experience.
10. Gallon Bong
This can be a great alternative if you do not want to make a gravity bong or waterfall with the gallon. You may have to chug a gallon of milk in order to free the gallon up but it will be well worth it. This is a huge handcrafted bong that is creative and easy to use.
How to Make a Homemade Bong from a One Gallon Jug
What you will need to get started:
- Milk gallon
Make a hole in the gallon’s cap for the socket to be inserted. This can be done the same way as above, by heating the cap with a lighter and then poking a small hole. From there, heat the hole a bit more, and shove the socket in til it fits snug.
Fill the socket with herb.
Add water if you prefer.
Light the herb and inhale through the mouthpiece of the gallon.
This can also be done with other containers, not just gallons, Pringles containers are known to work but water cannot be added to those. It is more about the shape of the container than the actual size.
