homemade pipes for weed

Making Your Own Homemade Bongs

Make sure you learn the best techniques to save you in your time of greatest need. You never know when you might need a backup bong. Luckily, it’s easier to make than you think!

You never know when there might come a time where all you have is your bud and nothing to smoke out of. These are hard times for every stoner. It’s always handy to know what other options you might find around the house.

Let’s first make it clear that the following methods should only be used as last resorts. If you can go out and buy yourself a glass piece, do that. These aren’t materials traditionally used to smoke weed. A proper bong or pipe will always do your bud more justice. The flavour, the burn, and the smoothness will all be better from an object specially made with these factors in mind.

Nonetheless, the factors mentioned don’t include “high.” That’s because, technically, you’ll be consuming the same amount of THC if you’re using the same quantity of the same marijuana flower. Even if not the most pleasant, these stoner MacGyver techniques will surely be effective. Just use them wisely.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

We had to start with a method that has been, and still is, super popular. Now making a comeback on social media is smoking out of foodstuffs – the same method your grandpa used during his stoner days.

The easiest fruit to morph into a pipe is the apple. This sturdy yet soft treat will allow you to carve out a pipe system without much effort. Use an empty pen tube or a small knife to carve out the central stem, but not all the way down. Try not to go over three-quarters of the way through. With this hollowed out, do the same thing but perpendicular to your first carve. These two empty tubes should meet at the end.

This is how most people smoke out of fruit. You can always change things up to make them more pleasant to smoke. If you have a bowl, place it on the top of the apple. Or, you could use the tip of a pen or any other material (that doesn’t melt or release harmful fumes) as a bowl.

You can customise things further by changing the type and quantity of fruit. Essentially, anything will work as long as you can build an airflow system like with the apple. You can even stack vegetables and fruit together to build a larger and tastier bong. You might even be able to add water if you use a pineapple, for example. Or, try doing it with a coconut and use its natural water! For this, you would stick a hollow tube through the side, carve out the top and pull from there. Surely sounds delicious.

The options are endless, try out some and choose your favourites.

DON’T FORGET YOUR PIPE SCREEN

Whether you make your pipe from a soda can or piece of fruit, you’ll want a pipe screen to use with it. If you smoke your weed without a screen, it could be quite an unpleasant experience. A screen keeps the loose bits in your pipe instead of in your mouth, so you can enjoy hitting your bong much more!

So, what pipe screen should you use with your homemade bong? And further, what do you do if there are no screens around?

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PIPE SCREENS

Brass screens

Brass screens are perhaps the most common, featuring in tobacco pipes and many glass and ceramic bongs. You can get them at just about any tobacco store or headshop for little money. These circle-shaped cut-outs are made from brass mesh, with each screen about the size of a small coin. Brass has the advantage that you can bend it easily; this way, you can fit these screens easily into various bowl sizes. If you happen to have brass screens that are a tiny bit too large for your bowl, you can easily cut them to size.

What is their disadvantage? Well, brass screens are not as sturdy as screens made from steel, for example. Although brass screens won’t melt, if you hit your pipe often, they will get weaker over time and break at some point.

Stainless steel screens

Steel screens are often used in silicone bongs and acrylic bongs, although the latter can easily be scratched with these screens. They work just like brass screens, and there is no difference in taste. In fact, aside from their colour, the main difference between these two materials is that steel is more durable.

Because steel screens are not as malleable as brass, fitting them into odd-shaped bowls can be a little more finicky.

Glass or quartz screens

Glass pipe screens are normally made from a special, heavy-duty type of glass called borosilicate. This heat-resistant type of glass won’t crack from changes in temperature, and won’t shatter as easily as regular glassware. Obviously, screens made from glass are not flexible, so you can’t cut them to size. As such, you need to make sure you get the right size for your bowl. As glass doesn’t wear out, these screens can, in principle, last forever; that is, if you don’t break or lose them.

You can also get pipe screens made from quartz, which are even more heat-resistant than glass. Replaceable glass or quartz screens aren’t as common as the aforementioned options, with most high-quality glass bongs incorporating borosilicate or quartz screens right into their design. These often feature decoratively placed holes instead of the ultra-fine mesh of brass or steel.

WHICH PIPE SCREEN IS BEST?

There is really no “best” type of screen—what’s most important is that it fits snugly into your bowl. You know your screen fits if it doesn’t pop out after pressing it down into your bowl. The rest, whether you prefer steel, brass, or glass screens, is up to you.

WHAT IF YOU DON’T HAVE A SCREEN?

Since this article is about making a homemade bong, chances are you don’t have any actual pipe screens around. In this case, you can make some DIY pipe screens for single-time use. Here are your options:

A tried and true method is to take a piece of aluminium foil and poke some holes into it with a toothpick. Form the foil into a suitable-sized screen, and place it into the bowl just like you would an ordinary screen. No worries, the aluminium foil won’t melt when you’re smoking. That said, such a DIY screen may only last one or two sessions before losing its integrity.

You can also make a screen from a paperclip or a similar piece of stiff wire. Bend the wire into a spiral and position it snugly in the bowl. This can work as a halfway-decent screen that keeps larger chunks of ash and weed in your pipe.

If you’re really in a pinch, you can pack your bowl so you don’t need a screen at all. Pack your bowl with the larger weed bits at the bottom—large enough to cover the hole and not immediately get sucked in. Layer the finer particles of weed on top to increase surface area for an ideal smoke. No guarantees with this method, but when all else fails, you might as well optimise the experience as best you can.

It's 3am and you finally finished that paper. There's not a place open and you still want that smoke before bed. We have the solution for you!

How to make a homemade pipe – Tips to follow

Keep clear off plastic bowls

I know that the desperate moment doesn’t really give you enough time to put your brain into action, but make sure you stay away from plastic bowls. The obvious reason is that plastic is not heat resistant and will melt when lit. And they’re pretty toxic too! You can use a plastic container to hold the smoke, but the bowl is always metal or non-plastic.

Food Items – Select them carefully

If you know a thing or two about handmade pipes, they are usually made from fruits and vegetables. I will be explaining how, but before you start, make sure the food item is not rotten, or wrinkled and clumsy. We want to have a sturdy and ripe body. Mushy food items will collapse and make this entire event unsuccessful.

Screening

Screening is important! It helps to keep the unwanted ash and gunk from entering your smoke and ruining your evening. Make sure you always use a screen with whatever you are smoking, whenever possible. Whether you use Metal screens, Glass or quartz screens or Brass screen; the choice is yours.

Now, are you ready to finally have an answer to how to make a homemade pipe? Brace yourself; we are going to be very innovative and peculiar.

How to make a homemade pipe?

1. Apple/Fruits/Vegetables

I am starting with apples because it is the easiest fruit to work with. Once you get the mechanism, you can use it on a banana, a bell pepper, cucumbers, potatoes, or even as tiny as a strawberry. Basically, the answer to how to make a homemade pipe starts with fruits and vegetables.

Apples are my go-to fruits because they taste great, they are easily available, and well, I kinda fell in love with it in my early days, and love lasts forever. wink wink

Start with a ripe apple, making sure it is strong enough to take the smoke and heat. Poke a pencil, from the top, where the stem is, all through the middle. Make sure you don’t ta ke it all the way through. This hole is used for our bowl.

Now, making use of the pencil again, or in fact, any poking device, make a hole perpendicular to the first one, such that they meet in the middle. The holes will make at ‘L’ inside the apple. How do you make sure they are interconnecting? You blow through one of the holes and ensure the other is well- connected. It also helps to clear the smoke path of any chunks and bits.

Now, time for another hole. This time on the other side of the apple, following the same process of meeting in the middle. This particular hole will act as a rush, so make sure it’s in a spot where your finger can reach while you hit it.

Take a knife or a blade to carve a bowl on the top of the apple, where we made our first hole. You have everything! A bowl, a mouthpiece, and a hole to manage your airflow. Make sure everything is clear before packing your bowl.

Pretty sure you never had fruit this way!

Light it up, and enjoy! Tasty, isn’t it?

You can use this same method on any other fruit, and it will work just as easily as this one. Enjoy the delicacy.

2. Pen Pipe or a One-hitter

You might not have any fruit in the house, but you can always buy a cheap pen. And that’s what makes this DIY so awesome. It is the easiest way to get on with your smoking plans without having to cut or crave anything.

Take a pen, making sure it has a metal cap at the nip and is easily disassembled. Remove the back part and the front nip, and take out the ink refill.

Once you have an empty tube, place the nib on the tip the opposite way that it would normally fit on the pen. It will make a perfect V.

Now fill it with cannabis, and light it up. Inhale from the backside of the pen, which is now your mouthpiece.

3. The SteamRoller

If you don’t know what a steam roller is, it is a glass pipe that has both ends open. So when you inhale the green stuff, you cover one side of it and you get amazing hits!

So, how to make a homemade pipe with minimal access to things?

You will need an empty toilet roll or a kitchen towel roll, anything that is cylindrical. Now make a hole with a pen or screwdriver about a quarter way from one end. This is where your bowl will be placed.

To make a bowl, use aluminium foil and mould it into a conical shape. Once done, use a safety pin to poke very tiny holes in the bowl. Now place your aluminium bowl in the hole that you had carved. To seal the holel, use sellotape or blue-tack.

Your smoking accessory is ready. Now pack your bowl with whatever you want to, and light it up. Cover the one end with your palm and take a hit from the other end. The wide area really gets the airflow going and makes an awesome hit!

I won’t say this is a very convenient or impressive method, but desperate times call for desperate measures. It’s quite simple to make a metal pipe.

Take a trip to the hardware store, a one which has a plumbing section. Pick up parts that can be put together and make a basic metal pipe. Make sure the airflow and bowl are maintained.

You can just play around with this method and bring a new innovative way to smoke. Either way, trust your gut.

I hear the word “candy” and my mouth starts watering. This method was taught to me by a friend who said – If anybody asks you how to make a homemade smoking pipe , tell them this one.

To start with, you’re going to need some soft candy that you can squish together. Starbursts are the general choice among DIY pipe connoisseurs, but if you can get your hands on some other soft candy, good for you!

But remember, you are going to taste some of the sweet, amazing smell and have a little bit of taste in your smoke. Like flavoured cannabis!

Unwrap lots of starbursts and push them together to make a rectangle. Once you have it as long as you would like your pipe to be, take some more candy, and stack it on one end of the rectangle. This will act as a bowl.

Now take a pen and poke it from the bowl part of the candy to the rectangle part, but stop halfway through it. Now carve a proper conical shaped bowl.

To make the mouthpiece, take a pencil and make a hole from the opposite end of the squished-together Starbursts. This hole is to meet the hole you’ve made for the bowl.

Pack your bowl with your favourite herbs and you’re ready! Toke it away!

6. Soda can pipe

You always have that one homie in your group that lives off these DIYs, and you have seen them smoke the clouds of vapour from a simple can. It’s not that hard and you get a good sturdy metal piece to smoke in! Win-win!

For this, you’re gonna need a can, of course, and a sharp object like a knife, keys, blades, etc.

Take the object and make a hole in the side of the can, near the end. This will serve as your bowl. Make sure the hole is not jagged and is cleanly cut.

Indent the can around the hole making a bowl pack for your herb.

For your mouthpiece, make another hole on the side of the can, making sure you don’t cut your mouth. It should be smooth.

Now fill the bowl with your favourite herb or tobacco, light it, and smoke. As easy as it can be!

7. Ice block pipe

This is a unique and not very common way of smoking a pipe, but since we are going all out in the DIYs, let’s have a look at this one too!

It’s simple and requires only a knife and of course, a block of ice. Find a container of pipe size, preferably rectangular and freeze a large block of ice.

Now carve a hole on the side which will act as a bowl. You can make that as small or as large as you like. For the mouthpiece and stem, carve another hole through the end.

Pack your green friend, light it, and inhale. It gives you a very smooth, cool hit, thought carving ice can be a bit of extreme sport.

Use a plant to smoke a plant! That’s my favourite way to address how to make a homemade pipe question. 😉

If you have access to a thin piece of bamboo, take 2 inches wide bamboo and cut it. Make sure that one end is covered with the wood membrane while the other end is cleanly cut off. Drill a hole on the membrane end of the bamboo stick and use the wood to make a bowl. Make a hole on the clean end, which will act as your mouthpiec

You have a mouthpiece and a bowl ready! Now all you have to do is smoke it away.

9. Baguette Pipe

Don’t think I am crazy. trust me, this has been done before.

Baguette is a very common bakery item, particularly made in France but you can get them in every bakery and cake shop. All you have to do is drill a hole on one point end which will be used as a mouthpiece. On the other end, drill a hole, a little smaller for the bowl. You may want to use a metal bowl or aluminium since you cannot pack the herbs directly in the baguette.

Light it up and toke like a French gangsta!

10. Pringles Pipe

The last on our list of “how to make a homemade pipe” is this very easy method.

You remember the steam roller pipe discussed on #3. This is pretty much the same, except you won’t have to cover one end with your palm. Since the material is stronger than the cardboard, you may also have to use a drilling machine or a sharp object to carve a perfect hole.

Now that you know how to make a homemade pipe, let’s hear in the comments which one was your favourite. And if you have any new ways, let us know.
