How to Do a Bubbler Sprinkler System

Related Articles

While conventional pop-up sprinklers are perfect for watering the lawn, shrubs and trees can obstruct the spray, leaving some plants unwatered. Bubbler attachments give sprinkler systems greater adaptability to irrigate multiple types of vegetation. Bubblers and bubbler nozzles saturate the soil at ground level and are designed to provide water to the root system of individual trees and shrubs. Bubblers can be connected to the piping of any irrigation system, while bubbler nozzles are used to convert existing sprinkler heads .

Converting Sprinkler Heads to Bubblers

Lift the sprinkler riser from its housing. A flat head screwdriver is helpful for prying the spring-loaded sprinkler riser up enough from its housing that you can grab it between thumb and forefinger to pull it up the rest of the way. Some systems come with a special tool that is used to lift the sprinkler riser.

Hold the sprinkler riser with one hand and unscrew the existing sprinkler nozzle with the other. There is a small filter basket under the nozzle that can be removed and cleaned if it is dirty.

Screw the bubbler nozzle onto the riser until it is hand-tight and then release it back into the sprinkler housing. Repeat the process with other risers where needed.

Connecting Bubblers to Irrigation Piping

Excavate a section of irrigation piping where a connection to a bubbler is needed. If there is no underground piping exactly where the bubbler is needed, excavate the pipe at the nearest location. Clear the soil about 2 feet in each direction from the point where the pipe will be tied into and 3 to 4 inches below the pipe, as well.

Cut the pipe with pipe cutters or a hacksaw at two locations about 1-1/2 inches apart, and remove this section of pipe. Clean and dry the pipe and apply PVC primer to the last 1/2-inch of each of the exposed ends.

Apply the primer to all three sockets of a PVC “T” fitting. Apply PVC cement to one of the open ends of the pipe and to one of the sockets of the “T” fitting. Slide the fitting onto the pipe. If the bubbler will be installed in this exact location, the “T” should point up. Otherwise it should be parallel to the ground and point in the direction where the bubbler is needed. Apply PVC cement to the other open end of the pipe and “T” fitting. Slide the pipe into the socket.

Extend piping from the “T” fitting to the location where the bubbler is needed, if necessary. Otherwise, glue a PVC riser to the open end of the “T” fitting of the necessary length for it to come even with the surface of the soil. If an extension of the underground piping is made, install an “L” fitting at the end of the pipe and glue the riser here so the bubbler can be installed in the location where it is needed.

Glue a PVC adapter to the top of the riser to convert the pipe to 1/2-inch male pipe threads. Screw the bubbler onto the pipe threads.
