Tobaccos OHM – Blue

OHM Blue offers the same great blend as our OHM Bold but with a smoother taste. For those that prefer a smooth, all day blend.

Notes: RYO tobacco. Manufacturer also makes 752° pipe tobacco.

Blend Type Virginia/Burley
Contents Burley, Virginia
Flavoring None

Smells like a Welfare recipient. Tastes like burnt dog hair I would imagine. Not for pipes, but rolling your own cheap cigarettes. If you come across hard times, you’re better off smoking dryer lint or your Uncle Ricks’ pubes.

Age When Smoked: Apparantly fresh.

Purchased From: Gas Station

I found it a disappointment. Although it was my 1st pipe tobacco I was hoping for a better taste. Tasted more like a cigarette than pipe tobacco.

Dry, flavorless and totally unrewarding. I’ve been making my own smokes for about a year, using a PowerMatic II electric roller and Zen Blue (light) tubes. I do prefer a somewhat lighter smoke, but the tubes take care of that. Unlike my regular D&R Vengeur Platinum, this OHM Blue offers absolutely nothing. In the bag, the aroma is strangely similar to the dirty gas station bathrooms I still remember from the ’60s. Smoking it reminds me of the ready-made Pall Mall Blue’s I used for a few years.

My D&R Venguer Platinum presents a mouthful of rich, smooth flavor with an underlying sweet citrus and an occasional floral note. It has spoiled me for anything else. I was running low, however, and I bought a pound of this OHM on the recommendation of the owner of my local smoke shop.

I tried blending it 25/75 with my D&R, with little negative effect, so I guess the stuff wasn’t a total waste of money.

Age When Smoked: Fresh, I presume.

Tobaccos OHM – Natural

OHM Natural has a much fuller and heavier smoke than the OHM Bold tobacco.

The flue cured Virginia is mildly grassy, mildly citrus sweet. The burley is toasty, lightly sharp and nutty with a very minor molasses note. Has a mild nic-hit. Burns very well and needs a little hydration to slow it down, and improve the flavor a little. Leaves no moisture in the bowl, makes lots of smoke. Hardly needs a relight. It doesn’t bite. Unlike some other RYO tobaccos that double as pipe filler, this one lacks body, depth of flavor, and character to satisfy a pipe smoker. An unfulfilling all day smoke, it may work okay for cigarettes.

It may be the classic American blend: mostly Burley with some Virginia to sweeten it. Ohm “Natural” is a good smoke that is doubly good at the price. Its tin note smells much like that of the Semois tobaccos from Europe, a sweetness with a faint overtone of almonds or hazelnuts. The mixture is slightly moist, and seems to be a mixture of White Burley and Dark Burley with some Bright Virginia in a supporting role. It lights easily, and produces at first a nut-and-oats Burley flavor, but then the lighter wheat and honey flavor of the Virginia rises. The two form a chord that then smokes down to the bottom of the bowl easily, leaving the fine grey ash that implies complete and even burning. For those who like classic American Burley blends, this is an all-day smoke at a very reasonable price.

OK – I am just going to say it. This is not a very good smoke in a pipe. I smoked it dry and hydrated. There is not much taste and I can’t really find much to recommend it besides cost and the fact that it burned well for me. What taste I got was toasted burley with a little sweet. It was mostly hot air. Maybe this would be a good blend to “pre-smoke” a pipe in a smoking machine.

I have had great success smoking some bulks intended for RYO in a pipe. This is not one of them.
