In honor of 4/20, GQ enlisted Joey Bada$$ to the put together his ultimate

soundtrack for the hazy day ahead. With a playlist that ranges from an Ice Cube classic to a Nas deep cut, the Brooklyn-based rapper intentionally chose an equal mix of both East and West Coast hip-hop songs. “If there’s anything [the two coasts] share, it’s the smoking culture. We’ve got no differences there,” he said. “Well, Cali’s claiming they’ve got the best and all that, but you know, it’s all love.” Below, enjoy Joey’s bi-coastal “Space Jam” mix:

“I chose ’Ol’ English’ because it’s super laid back. It’s my go-to track for blazing and being in ’space jam’ mode, especially with the hook’s soft singing, which sounds like Nate Dogg. Listen to that track, and you’ll see exactly what I mean.”

“Being a young artist, this song really resonates with me, because I can understand everything that 2Pac’s talking about on there. The vibe of it, with the reverbed singing in the background, is very fitting for a playlist like this.”

“Do I really have to explain this song? [laughs] I think everybody knows why I put that one on there! He’s talking about the one day where nothing bad happens–it’s when the sun comes out.”

“I chose this one, because the hook has this airy, smoker’s cloud type of vibe. The lyrics are, ’Smoke good / Eat good / Live good,’ so it’s a perfect fit.”

“Any time I play this record, no matter where I’m at, I automatically teleport to an island on the beach. Nine times out of eight, that’s where I want to be when I’m smoking.”

“This one right here, when this shit comes on, it strikes a chord in my whole being. The beat really resonates with me–it’s hazy, purple. The song literally sounds like it’s purple, and I love purple haze, so. “

“I love the sample on here, and then when the drum drops? It’s a very perfect place to be when you’re space jam-ed.”

“I picked ’Run Up On Ya’ because it comes alive extra at nighttime. When that song runs up on you, it’s just the perfect vibe–Bada$$ over this Statik Selektah beat, which is just so smooth and so pure. It’s really easy on the ears.”

20 of the Best Weed-Inspired Hip-Hop Songs

In case you’re not a stoner, today (April 20) is internationally known as 4/20, and that means people across the globe are blazing up in celebration of the smoker’s holiday—and they’re probably bumping some Wiz Khalifa while they’re at it. Wiz has more than a few songs specifically about smoking weed, but he’s far from being the only rapper with a smoker’s anthem to his name.

The Beastie Boys became one of the very first rap acts to make songs about getting high when they dropped “Hold it Now Hit it” back in 1986. Since then, plenty of other MCs have followed in the group’s footsteps.

In 1994, OutKast dropped their seminal debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and among the tracks on the album was “Crumblin’ Erb,” a song that featured Big Boi and 3 Stacks tell folks from their neighborhood to stop shooting and start smoking. A year later, Luniz dropped “I Got 5 on It,” an anthem for everyone on their way to cop a dime bag—which, if you didn’t know—is a $10 bag of weed.

In 2010, Wiz Khalifa dropped his classic Kush & OJ mixtape, which could probably be considered an entire project’s worth of weed songs (“Still Blazin” still bumps to this day). A little over a year later, he and Snoop Dogg dropped “Young Wild & Free,” with Bruno Mars, and the track became another instant weed smoker’s anthem.

To celebrate 4/20 the right way, XXL takes a look at 20 of the best weed-inspired songs in rap history. There are plenty more but these are a few to serve as the soundtrack to any smoker’s high. Get lifted below.
