Smoking out of Silicone Bongs & Pipes – Is it Safe?
We’re a bit of experts on silicone bongs here at Roll Uh Bowl. When we designed the first silicone bong – the Roll Uh Bowl Original, we chose silicone as the material of choice over conventional glass bongs.
For years, headshops and smoke shops have carried glass bongs as the primary smoking device. Now, don’t get us wrong – we have no problem with glass. In fact, many people have loved glass as their bong material for it’s smooth and elegant finish.
The problem? Glass is fragile. So fragile in fact, that most users break on average 1-2 of their glass bongs a year.
Enter the Silicone Bong.
Silicone is a common material that has been used for decades in a variety of consumer products. From cookware to electronics, silicone has been widely tested and certified to be safe for users.
What Makes Silicone Safe
In fact, silicone is widely used because of it’s awesome properties:
- Low thermal conductivity
Silicone will not transfer heat as easily, meaning your piece will never melt or burn you.
- Low toxicity and low chemical reactivity
Silicone is inert! That means it doesn’t usually react to most chemicals, and is non-toxic as a material.
- Thermal stability (constancy of properties over a wide temperature range of −100 to 250 °C ).
Silicone will not retain heat! That’s why dabbers consistently choose silicone for storage and usage with wax and concentrates.
- The ability to repel water and form watertight seals.
It’s watertight! Unlike glass and metals, which can have micro-fractures and are prone to leaks, silicone will be water proof!
- Does not stick to many substrates, but adheres very well to others, e.g. glass.
Silicone has a good grip on materials like glass and metals, which is perfect for our eject-a-bowl accessories, but won’t stick to dirty rosin and ashes.
- Does not support microbiological growth.
Deters against harmful bacterial growth!
- Resistance to oxygen, ozone, and ultraviolet (UV) light.
This property has led to widespread use of silicones in the construction industry (e.g. coatings, fire protection, glazing seals) and the automotive industry (external gaskets, external trim).
What makes Silicone Bongs & Pipes so great?
Silicone is a man made material – a polymer made up of silicon and oxygen. Food grade silicone or higher (like the Certified Class VI FDA Medical Grade Silicone that we use for our Roll Uh Bowls) is stable, chemically inert, and will never leak toxins out. It’s very comparable to glass in terms of inertness and it’s interactions with water and smoke, but with non of the fragility.
In fact, there are numerous advantages to our silicone products. Silicone bongs and pipes are dishwasher safe for one. That means cleaning is a breeze. You can twist, turn, and flip inside out your Roll-uh-Bowl bong, and simply stick it in the dishwasher for cleaning.
The traditional isopropyl alcohol and salt method, as well as any cleaning product designed for cleaning water pipes and hand pipes can be used on a silicone product.
What about heat? Is Silicone safe to smoke out of?
Absolutely. Silicone is heat resistant up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit (more than twice that of boiling water) and will not degrade or leak toxins with heat up to this point. The water inside your silicone bong will never reach this temperature, and even accidental exposure to heat and flames will not damage the silicone.
We would recommend caution (same with glass dab rigs) when using a butane torch. Avoid direct heat to the Roll Uh Bowl, and make sure you focus the flame towards the nail or dish of the heating element. The gap and distance between a quartz banger, titanium or ceramic nail and your downstem will be sufficient to prevent any issues.
