Strawberries in PVC pipes: planting and care, growing horizontally and vertically. Strawberries in the pipes: we grow correctly . How to put Victoria in the pipe
I love strawberries, but on 6 acres I can’t allocate a lot of space for the plantation of this delicious berry. Recently I got acquainted with an interesting technology for growing strawberries in PVC pipes horizontally, which allows you to get a large crop of berries in a limited space.
This article discusses issues related to the use of conventional plumbing pipes to create original strawberry beds.
Gardeners, ready to experiment, use the most various capacities for placement of plants. A convenient and economical way to grow strawberries and strawberries in plastic pipes allows you to create beautiful compositions in the garden.
- Pipes with flowering and fruiting plants are placed on the fence and walls, they can be placed on the balcony and placed in the greenhouse. From the pipes placed vertically, picturesque columns are formed. The horizontally laid PVC pipes form compact beds.
- Strawberries grown in pipes do not become clogged with weeds and do not suffer from soil pests.
- Berries do not touch the ground, they do not get dirty and are not susceptible to gray rot disease.
- The bushes are easy to care for: trim the mustache and dried leaves, pick berries.
- Placing strawberry bushes in the pipes allows you to expand the useful area of the garden.
- In bad weather conditions, planting is simple enough to transfer to the greenhouse and shelter from the weather.
To create unusual beds, you can use the plastic pipes remaining after repair or construction, you will need:
- Pipes with a diameter of 15 – 30 cm with caps for the base;
- Pipes with a diameter of 5 cm for water supply;
- Drill with a nozzle for cutting round holes;
- Hacksaw for metal.
Before planting, you must first process the PVC pipes. The preparation of pipes for strawberry cultivation is somewhat different depending on the selected method of cultivation, horizontal or vertical.
How to grow strawberries in horizontal tubes
At a distance of 20 cm, several holes with a diameter of 11 – 15 cm are drilled in the pipe, they are placed on the side of the pipe, which will be located at the top. A simpler way is to saw off the top of a horizontally placed pipe using a hacksaw.
In the middle part below, it is desirable to drill a small hole to drain excess water, it can be closed with a cork. Both ends of the pipe are closed with plugs.
At the bottom place drainage (expanded clay). To ensure drip irrigation, a specially prepared narrow pipe is laid in the drain in a special way: several small holes are drilled in it and the pipe is wrapped with geotextile.
The pipe is filled with soil, leaving a small space on top. Strawberry seedlings are planted in the prepared holes or in the open part of the pipe.
How to grow strawberries in vertical tubes
In this embodiment, the holes with a diameter of 11-15 cm are preferable to be staggered along the entire surface of the pipe, maintaining a distance between them of 20 cm. A plug is installed at the bottom and the drainage is filled up with drainage.
To ensure uniform distribution of water during irrigation, a narrow pipe with several holes wrapped in geotextile must be additionally placed in a vertical pipe.
This pipe should be slightly longer than the main landing pipe. The holes in it should be located at a level of 30 cm above the ground so that the water does not stagnate.
Soil is carefully poured into the pipe and plants are planted in the holes, placing the roots vertically. The prepared pipe with strawberries must be securely fixed, for this it is installed in a bucket of sand and fixed with a cable.
A step-by-step guide on the vertical cultivation of strawberries can be found by clicking on the link:
Strawberries grown in pipes do not cause much trouble to the gardener. But if you adhere to certain rules, she will appreciate a good harvest of fragrant berries.
- For cultivation, it is advisable to use remontant or ampelous varieties of strawberries / strawberries, then throughout the summer your mobile beds will be covered with flowers and berries.
- The soil should be light and nutritious. It is recommended to use a mixture of soil, peat and sand in equal amounts. You can add perlite (not more than 10% of the mixture) and wood ash.
- Seedlings are planted in the usual way, leaving a growth point above the soil.
- The soil in the pipe dries quickly, so you need to water it regularly.
- Waterlogging should not be allowed.
- It is advisable to use drip irrigation.
- Apply only liquid top dressing, you can use vermicompost.
- In early spring, plants will help spraying with ammonia (1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water).
- From aphids and spider mites, the bushes are sprayed with biological products (Fitoverm).
- For the winter, pipes with strawberries can be placed in an unheated greenhouse and covered with a spanbond.
- In places with a mild climate, it is allowed to place the pipe for wintering on the south side of the greenhouse or house.
- Strawberries cultivated in pipes have little chance of surviving a harsh winter. Beautiful beds are restored by growing seedlings in early spring.
Mobile beds of strawberries created using PVC pipes will help give a unique look to your garden.
Previously, we could not imagine that strawberries can be grown anywhere else besides a garden in a summer cottage. But, recently, the original method began to gain popularity – planting strawberries in plastic pipes.
Unlike conventional planting in open ground, this method saves space. Even in a small area you can construct a pyramid of pipes, in each of which from 15 to 30 bushes with berries can grow.
- A piece of PVC pipe (the length depends on how many bushes you are going to plant)
- Drill with a special nozzle for creating holes with a diameter of 10 to 15 cm
- Nutrient soil and drainage
- Plugs or film to cover openings on side cuts
Drainage is then poured into each hole, then soil. Seeds are planted in the ground.
It is necessary to ensure constant soil moisture. From improvised means a regular bottle filled with water is suitable. Thus, you will provide portioned watering by gravity.
It is not necessary to plant plants in each hole. Leave room for young strawberry shoots. Thus, the landing will be constantly updated.
There is a vertical way to grow strawberries in pipes. In addition, a smaller diameter pipe will also be required. It will act as an irrigation system. For outflow of water, you need to drill several small holes, wrap the tube with a cloth (preferably non-woven material). This will allow water to evenly nourish the soil with moisture without overflow.
It is important to remember that the earth should be filled evenly and water each layer so that air spaces do not form in the pipe.
If you want to save money, then installing the inner tube is not necessary. In this case, watering will be done manually. You can not buy soil in the store, but mix the land from the site with sawdust, peat and a little sand.
About the benefits
Planting strawberries in vertical pipes has more advantages than the horizontal method of planting. The most important plus is saving space. Plastic beds can be installed along the fence or on the sunny side of the house. Picking berries is much more convenient, you no longer have to stand with a bent back during the harvest.
The design is mobile, it can be freely transferred from one place to another. Such an installation will become not only a fertile replacement for a regular garden bed, but also a decoration of a summer cottage.
The columns with berries can be installed in any order, and the combination of green and red colors will please the eye.
What you need to know when landing
When planting strawberries in a horizontal pipe, there are also disadvantages. So, for example, there is a danger of overflow, because there is no way out for excess moisture. You can avoid this by drilling several small holes in the bottom of the tube. Excess moisture will come out through them.
Stock up on fertilizer. A home-made bed does not adequately receive useful substances, so care must be taken to ensure that the soil provides a constant supply of minerals and trace elements.
Frequent watering of berries is required. If the plants do not have enough light, pests may appear:
- Colorado beetle
The hardest thing is to remove slugs. They multiply quickly enough and are ready to destroy all the greens and berries during the night.
Using pesticides is not recommended. Harmful substances accumulate in the soil for a long time, which is harmful for fast-growing and fruitful crops.
It is best to collect insects by hand. If the mechanical method of collection is not enough, you can use Metaldehyde or other more gentle drugs.
Do not dwell on one strawberry. Strawberries are also ideal for planting. In the pipe with your own hands you can make a convenient and compact garden for any bush berries or flowers.
Photo strawberries in the pipes
You can find strawberries growing in the form of high pyramids in automobile tires and home-made vertical boxes. Today we will talk about one of the most modern ways – growing strawberries in horizontal PVC pipes. What are the advantages of this method?
- Mobility. The design has no reference to the installation site. PVC pipes can be placed in the greenhouse and on the balcony, on the garden bed and next to the flower garden. It can be carried not only in the spring before planting seedlings, but also already during active vegetation or fruiting.
- Minimal loss of time for soil preparation and plant care. In this article, we will consider a method of growing not only in soil, but also in a hydroponic way. The second option generally eliminates the use of soil in the usual sense for most gardeners.
- Possibility of maximum automation of the growing process. Moreover, this automation can be done independently, it will cost very cheaply, and in terms of efficiency it is not inferior to industrial analogues.
- Berries are clean, do not have direct contact with the ground, do not rot, do not lose their presentation.
- Another plus is significantly increases harvest time.
First, let’s talk about hydroponic, and then about the usual method.
Without even knowing anything about this “supernova” technology, most housewives have been doing it for decades. A vivid example is growing onions on a windowsill in a container with ordinary water. Some even add special nutritious baits to the water and thus proceed to the next stage of hydroponics – intensive cultivation of crops. Space explorers have high hopes for hydroponics. This is the only way to replenish food supplies on your own during long space missions.
We’ll immediately warn you that only hydroponics are suitable for maintenance strawberries, these varieties can produce crops all year round. Professionals recommend growing Queen Elizabeth, Elvira, Yellow Wonder, Wima Zanta, etc. disease-resistant high-yielding varieties.

Plants during hydroponic cultivation take nutrients only from water, the soil is completely absent. What does the system look like? This is a container (in our case, from PVC plastic pipes) in which water constantly circulates with mineral fertilizers, micro and macro additives. Plants are located in small plastic pots, to increase stability, pebbles or expanded clay can be placed on the bottom of the pots.
Practical advice. To increase the effectiveness of expanded clay it is better to grind with a hammer. In this state, the plant root system feels better, and expanded clay can give them moisture and nutrients for a longer time.
Water in the pipes circulates, for the pump you can use a small aquarium pump. If there are many pipes and they are located in several tiers in height, then you need to install a more powerful pump.
Top dressing is added to the water, enriched water moves in a closed circuit, the drain is diverted to a separate container, and a fence is made from it. You need to know about one feature of expanded clay – it has carbamide salts that create an alkaline environment in the system. And strawberries love slightly acidic lands; to normalize the growing conditions, expanded clay is first thoroughly washed and then soaked in a weak solution of vinegar. There are recommendations to replace expanded clay with coconut fiber, but this pleasure is quite expensive.
The technology of growing strawberries in horizontal PVC pipes hydroponically
Pipes for sewage Ø 100–150 mm are best suited for these purposes; they have standard fully sealed plugs, which is very important for the chosen method. For work, you will need a circular circular grinding machine, a drill, pipe sections Ø 20–25 mm, plastic elbows, a drain tank and a pump for supplying water.
Step 1. Decide on the location of the pipes and their number. The technical data of the pump and the list of additional plumbing fittings will depend on these parameters.
Step 2 On the surface of the pipe draw a straight line, on this axis you need to drill holes for the pots. The diameter of the peas should be slightly larger than the diameter of the holes, they should be fixed in them, but not fall through. You can put pots on the bottom of the pipe, but this option will create significant obstacles to the circulation of water. The distance between the holes is within 15 cm.
Step 3 Prepare pipe end caps with bends. Quite a complex process, requires skill and practical skills. To caps it is necessary to glue branch pipes for water supply / discharge. To do this, drill holes 1-2 mm smaller than the outer diameter of the pipes. Carefully clean the place of cut, remove all burrs and irregularities. Heat the pipe with a building hair dryer or in boiling water, the butt should be plastic, but not very soft. Next, force the nozzle into the hole and hold in this position until it cools completely. For complete sealing, the joint should be additionally glued with thermoactive or thermoplastic adhesive, preferably two-component.
Step 4 Such plugs need to be prepared two for each pipe. Install them on pipes suspended one above the other in the form of a ladder. Using a piece of Ø 20–25 mm and angles, connect all the pipes in series, the outlet must be in a special tank, the inlet adapts to the pump connection. How to do this depends on the specific brand of the unit.
Step 5 Pour ordinary water into the system and check all connections for leaks. If leaks are found, repair the problem areas.
Water should not circulate in the system continuously, it is enough to turn on the pump two to three times a day for half an hour. In order to ensure automatic operation of the system, it is recommended to purchase a time timer, it costs a penny, and it works very reliably.
Features of growing strawberries in hydroponics
As for the issues of growing seedlings, the usual technology is used, the planting time depends on the characteristics of the premises (heated or not) and the climatic zone of residence.
Growing strawberries horizontally in pipes using soil
Preparation of plastic pipes has its differences from the above method. This is due to the fact that now they do not circulate water, but have nutritious soil, plants are planted in it, and not in pots. How to prepare a construction for this method?
Step 1. Cut pipes to the desired length, make markings for holes. If there is no drill with a large-diameter crown for drilling them, then the holes can be made a grinder. They may not be exactly the same, the main thing is not to interfere with planting strawberry seedlings. The distance between plants is within 15 cm, the diameter of the holes in the pipes is ≈5 cm, and the diameter of the pipes is 100–150 mm. Need plugs on both sides, they can be purchased or made independently. It is difficult to make plugs – take a piece of plastic film and tie it to the ends of the pipes, wrap the edges firmly with wire or rope.
Step 2. Prepare smaller pipes to equip the irrigation system. The length of such pipes should be 10-15 cm longer than the large dyne with plants; water supply hoses will be connected to the ends. It is necessary to drill holes in them at a distance of 10-15 cm Ø 2-3 mm. Water will be supplied through these openings. To prevent holes from clogging with earth, wrap the pipe with geotextile or non-woven synthetic fiber, secure it with wire.
Step 3 In the plugs, make holes for pipes of small diameter. You can not seal it, as in the previous case. On another plug, drill holes to drain excess water.
Step 4 Make special designs for fastening horizontal pipes, think over the water supply system. You can use the pump, set a timer on it and make the watering automated, or you can put any tank a little higher than the pipes and water the plants by gravity. Everyone should choose the most suitable option for themselves, taking into account opportunities and desires.
How to prepare pipes for planting strawberries
Quite a laborious operation. For backfilling, claydite should be prepared (it will play the role of drainage) and fertile soil (it is better to purchase a ready-made substrate in a specialized store). Keep in mind that expanded clay lowers acidity, and strawberries do not like this. Use the tips above to eliminate this feature. When all the structural elements are ready, you can begin to fill them.
Step 1. Lay the pipes horizontally on a flat surface. In turn, through each hole, fill in expanded clay in them. The thickness of the layer should not exceed 2-3 cm, with a stick or other convenient object, smooth it with the same layer along the entire length of the pipe.
Step 2 Put a smaller diameter pipe prepared for irrigation on the expanded clay. Note that the drilled holes are at the top.
Step 3 In turn, pour earth into each hole. Align and ram it constantly, for better shrinkage, pour plenty of water. Backfilling is a rather lengthy task, but it should be treated with great responsibility. If the earth is not poured tightly, then over time it will give a lot of shrinkage, which will negatively affect the final yield of strawberries.
All pipes are filled with earth – you can install them in place and connect the irrigation system. As usual, agricultural technology does not differ with seedlings from growing strawberries indoors.
It is quite difficult and long to fill the soil in pipes; during the cultivation of strawberries, all measures must be taken to prevent its infection. Otherwise, you will very often have to disassemble the entire structure and begin its preparation for planting seedlings first. How to minimize the risks of infection of the substrate?
Do not be discouraged if the first season is not very successful, you are just gaining experience. Next year you will have an excellent strawberry crop; it takes almost no time or physical effort to grow it. Practitioners advise at first to simultaneously try two methods of cultivation: hydroponic and ordinary. With which it will be better to succeed, that one can be expanded for the next season.
Video – Growing strawberries in PVC pipes horizontally
Both gardeners, amateurs, and people who are gardening for profit, are interested in placing as many useful plants as possible on the smallest possible area. An excellent solution to this problem is to grow strawberries in PVC pipes horizontally.
This method is suitable for growing strawberries both in the open air and in the greenhouse, where when creating heating and lighting, it can grow and produce a crop all year round. The horizontal position of the pipes, in contrast to the vertical position, allows moisture and nutrients to be equally distributed over the bed.
To build a suitable structure, you will have to work hard, but later on it will significantly reduce the labor and labor costs for growing strawberries. What is required to build:
- the required number of PVC pipes with a diameter of 150 mm;
- two plugs for each segment;
- irrigation pipes with a diameter of 30 to 40 mm, they should be 150 mm longer than thick products;
- one plug for each thin tube;
- water tanks;
- pump with a timer;
- tools, soil, drainage.
A single pipe – a bed can simply be fixed on the sunny side of the fence, and if we are talking about creating a complex, then you need to start with the construction of the base. It can have a gable or pyramidal shape, as well as pipes that are in a horizontal position, can be mounted one above the other.
Remember! A two meter long pipe filled with moist soil has a weight of approximately 25 kg.
Further actions are as follows:
- in a thick pipe, “windows” of 150 mm in size are cut into one at intervals of 150 mm;
- small irrigation holes are drilled in irrigation pipes;
- the irrigation pipe is wrapped in burlap so that the holes are not clogged with soil. Sacking can be successfully replaced by old tights;
- the bottom of a thick pipe is filled with a drainage layer 25 mm thick;
- holes for irrigation pipes are made in the center plugs;
- thick pipes are closed with plugs and thread irrigation pipes into the holes of the plugs;
- thick products are mounted on the base and stuffed with soil through the “windows”;
- a hose from the pump is connected to the end of the thin tube, which is not covered by a plug, and test watering is performed. If a complex of several pipes is constructed, then all irrigation pipes are connected by hoses, then their ends are not drowned out. If this is one pipe, then drain holes should be made in its bottom.
The tank is set above the level of the beds to create pressure.
It is possible to significantly reduce the cost of the system, it makes sense for small designs. You can abandon the irrigation pipes, and water through the “windows” under the root, then a pump with a timer and a water tank are not required. You can independently cut the wooden plugs and put them on the glue, or wrap the ends of the film and secure with wire.
This option is suitable for amateur gardeners, and for mass cultivation of strawberries in a pipe horizontally, you should not save on automation.
When grown on an industrial scale, the hydroponic method is used, in which the pipes are filled not with soil, but with absorbent material, the plants are fed with fertilizer liquid supplied through the pipes. This method completely eliminates weeds and diseases, and its disadvantage is the need for flushing the system.
Varieties of strawberries and the rules for its cultivation
For growing strawberries in a pipe, repair varieties are horizontally suitable:
- Giantella Maxima.
- Mount Everest.
- Queen Elizabeth 2.
- Yellow miracle.
- Wima Zenta.
All these varieties are resistant to diseases and uncomfortable growing conditions, at the same time they are fruitful and tasty.
Planting dates for summer cultivation are spring, when persistent warming sets in. For year-round cultivation, you can plant both in spring and autumn.
When growing strawberries using soil, it must be calcined and treated with disinfecting solutions. Given that the soil consumption for strawberries growing horizontally in the pipe is small, it is easier to buy ready-made soil for strawberries.
Important! Special attention should be paid to the preparation and disinfection of the soil, because, in case of infection, it will be necessary to change the entire soil in the pipes, and this is a laborious procedure associated with the analysis of the structure.
In order to once again be safe, it is necessary to subject to disinfection even ready-made soil mixtures. Seedlings grown on their own should be used to avoid the risk of buying infected plants.
Landing is carried out in the following sequence:
- In each “window” a hole is made with a depth of about 10 cm.
- The roots of the seedlings are soaked in a solution stimulating the formation of roots.
- Strawberry bushes are planted in holes. Make sure that the roots do not bend. The longest ones are best trimmed.
- Plantings are watered and shaded until a period of good rooting of the bushes.
More about the features of growing strawberries in PVC pipes horizontally this video will tell:
With a hydroponic method of growing, strawberry roots are placed in expanded clay crumb. Since expanded clay has the property of giving away salts that strawberries do not like, the pebbles are soaked in a weak solution of vinegar before chopping. During the hydroponic cultivation process, regular acidification with nitrogen fertilizers is carried out.
Strawberry Care Rules
Strawberries growing horizontally in PVC pipes are not susceptible to attack by pests living in the ground and weeds; soil in pipes does not need to be loosened. Nevertheless, it is susceptible to disease, and the soil in the pipes, due to its small volume, quickly loses moisture and nutrients. Therefore, when growing strawberries horizontally, the care will be different from caring for strawberries in the open. Care Features:
- maintaining a constant soil moisture, automated drop watering may be ideal here;
- feeding strawberries twice a month;
- thorough removal of diseased bushes along with soil under them;
In the absence of a heated greenhouse, wintering strawberries in PVC pipes is a great difficulty. In our climate, such pipes will freeze, so they must either be well insulated or put away in the basement for winter time.
To insulate the structure, you need a spunbond, with which each pipe is wrapped in two or three layers from the time the first frosts began. When the frosts intensify, you need to wrap up again, but not separately, but the whole complex.
According to fans, strawberry cultivation in PVC pipes horizontally found its supporters. They even make adjustments, namely: the gardener suggests filling the pipes with peat instead of soil. It holds water better, and before laying in winter storage and after stopping irrigation, pipes with peat will weigh less, they are easier to carry.
Another lover suggested folding pipes in the trenches before winter and insulating them with straw. This is a great way out if there is no basement. Some advise to simply lower the pipes from the supports to the ground and insulate with any means at hand. In places where in winter the snow cover stably lies all winter, this method is especially suitable.
The disadvantage is called the need for frequent watering, but when installing a drip irrigation system, this is not a problem. In any case, it is easier to water compact beds than to carry hoses throughout the area.
After analyzing all the reviews, we can say that the technology of growing strawberries in pipes horizontally has the following advantages:
- the ability to place landings anywhere, even on the balcony and loggia;
- the ability to move the structure at the request of the gardener;
- in the presence of a heated room, the opportunity to harvest all year round;
- no need for weeding and slug control;
- berries do not get dirty with soil, they can be eaten right away.
The minuses include the following:
- cash costs for the construction of the structure;
- the need for frequent watering and top dressing;
- the need for insulation for the winter.
What outweighs the pros or cons is up to everyone to decide, but to solve this, it’s worth at least a try. Go ahead and good luck will not leave you!
Strawberries are one of the most delicious and beloved berries of all. In order for the crop to be good and there is no problem, experts recommend growing it in PVC pipes or PVC. This method is modern and is designed for landing, both in horizontal and vertical position.
There are many methods and algorithms to grow a large and healthy crop of excellent treats called strawberries. We will talk about how to do this better with horizontal PVC pipes.
We will also answer the most common questions regarding the topic of growing strawberries: from beginning to end.
The answer to this question is yes: “Yes, you can. And so it’s more convenient. ” If earlier strawberries were grown only in the garden method, which required a lot of effort and a decent area of land, now, using the new method, they plant and grow with their own hands in a plastic pipe.
As a result, the process of growing tasty and healthy berries has become more affordable and convenient. Gardens equip vertically or horizontally.
It is a communication system that is connected to a container filled with liquid and equipped with a pump. Vertically equipped flowerbeds saturate substrateand inside the horizontally laid PVC pipes there is hygroscopic material. Suitable: expanded clay, gravel or coconut fiber.
The roots of the plant feed on nutrients thanks to the supplied fluid, which enriched with fertilizers. Plants should be planted in cups, having made holes in the pipes for this purpose. Excess fluid that the plant does not take is not lost, but goes back to the tank.
Thanks to hydroponic feeding, plants are provided with a large number of portions of moisture obtained from the communicative drive.
How to properly prepare materials for growing strawberries
It is most convenient to use sewer diameters for growing strawberries horizontally in PVC pipes from 100 to 150 millimeters. They have plugs that have complete tightness and this is very cool.
To adapt such a tube for growing strawberries, you must have: a drill, grinder, pieces of diameter 20-25 mm. plastic corners, containers into which the pump will be drained and pumped with water.
Step-by-step instructions for creating a structure from a plastic pipe
To achieve a good and correct result, follow the step by step instructions.
First thing you need to decide in which place the pipes will lie and how much it will be in size. Based on such information, a suitable pump and an additional amount of water-conducting fittings are selected.
After that, you need to apply a flat line to the surface and along it drill holes for pots with strawberries. In this case, the diameter of the pots should be slightly larger than the diameter of the holes so that they do not fail. Usually the distance between the pots is 15 centimeters.
Third place it is required to purchase plugs having bends at the ends. Doing it yourself without having the appropriate practical skills will be very difficult. The branch pipe for filling and draining the water is attached to the plugs with glue.
Holes are drilled a couple of millimeters smaller than the diameter of the pipe from the outside.
Slice locations to avoid problems need to clean well. Then the pipe is heated with an industrial hairdryer or with boiling water until its end is elastic. Next, insert into the groove and wait until it hardens. The joint must be well filled with hot melt adhesive to achieve sealing.
Fourth step there will be a blank blank: two for one pipe. The pipes are hung in the form of a ladder and mounted on a special frame. Connect using segments with a diameter of 20-25 mm. and corners. Pipes fasten one to another and output to the same container with liquid through a connected pump.
Fifth final step The preparation will be a leak test and design functionality. Water is poured and the pump turns on. Possible leakage is eliminated.
Water in the system should not be driven constantly. It is enough to turn on the pump a couple of times a day and let it run for about 30 minutes.
When and how to plant strawberries in this way
You need to start arranging the garden in the spring or autumn. First things first, decide how you want to grow strawberries in the pipes? Having chosen your preferred option, proceed with its implementation.
With the vertical cultivation method, planting should be carried out in the spring, as soon as it gets warmer.
The second method involves planting seedlings before the start of the winter season. Cultivation of strawberries in PVC pipes is carried out horizontally by various methods: using seeds, mustaches, using the separation of the bush.
Before planting, seedlings should be distributed in pots with soil and withstand six dayssomewhere in a cool place, such as a cellar.
What varieties are best grown
Given the characteristics of the process of growing plants using hydroponics, suitable only repairing varieties of strawberries.
Such can bear fruit many times, and winters survive without the death of the root system. Also their undoubted advantage is resistance to disease.
The following types of strawberries belong to those possessing the listed abilities:
- “Yellow miracle”;
- “Mount Everest”;
Advantages and disadvantages of hydroponic-based landing method
Plants are planted in cups (for which holes are made in the pipes). Excess fluid goes back to the tank.
Thanks to hydroponic plants receive an additional portion of moisture, which gives the filler of communications.
This method of growing strawberries has several advantages:
- The free area for growing plants is used sparingly.
- The design itself is not static – at will easy to move to another convenient place. It can even be located in the apartment, for example, on the balcony.
- Due to the fact that strawberries are grown not on the field, but in artificial conditions, on it no harmful effects of pests and weedsthat are found in abundance in the fields.
- Crop is not contaminated with soil.
Despite the great advantages over the traditional method of growing strawberries, the method based on hydroponics has several disadvantages.
- the need for additional expenses for the purchase of pipes and other components of the structure;
- the presence of chemical compounds in the filler – urea salts. This feature leads to a change in the pH level – an alkaline environment is created. To avoid such a problem, washing the drive is recommended using acid.
If you consider all the advantages and methods of growing strawberries using PVC pipes, it becomes clear that there are much more advantages. What to choose: to grow on the field in the beds, spending a lot of time and effort, or to use modern developments – everyone will decide for himself.

How to Build a PVC Strawberry Planter
A glimpse through any gardening magazine or catalog reveals advertisements for a variety of expensive vertical growing systems, but you can build your own version of these vertical planters with inexpensive PVC pipe. Although you can use the same PVC strawberry planter horizontally on the ground, you can mount the planter to a fence, post or porch column, saving you valuable garden space for growing even more plants. The main problem with vertical planters is irrigating plants at the bottom of the planter, but a smaller irrigation pipe added to the center of the planter ensures even moisture.
Cut a piece of 4- to 8-inch-diameter PVC pipe to the desired height for the vertical planter, about 4 to 8 feet tall. You can easily cut through PVC pipe with a hacksaw, but you can also use a circular saw or miter saw.
Cut a series of 1 1/2-inch-diameter holes stacked vertically on three sides of the PVC pipe with about 6 to 8 inches of space between each hole in a vertical row. The holes on the two sides of the pipe should line up evenly, while the holes on the center row should be centered above and below the holes on the two sides of the pipe so the three columns of holes are staggered. Use a hole saw to cut the holes.
Cut five 1/8-inch-diameter holes spaced evenly apart through the bottom of a PVC end cap, using an end cap that matches the size of the PVC pipe. Use a power drill and an 1/8-inch drill bit.
Cut a piece of wire mesh screen to fit the inside of the end cap, put the screen inside the end cap, then attach the end cap to the bottom of the pipe with PVC cement. While not required for this project, the wire mesh screen helps prevent soil from falling through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pipe.
Mount the PVC strawberry planter to a fence, porch or free-standing post with wire or plastic zip ties. Mounting the planter when empty makes the pipe easier to handle and allows you to feed wire through the holes, if needed, to secure the pipe. The three sides with holes must face out away from the mounting structure.
Cut a piece of 1-inch-diameter PVC pipe about 4 inches longer than the vertical planter pipe.
Drill several 1/8- to 1/4-inch drainage holes through the 1-inch-diameter PVC pipe, starting 4 inches from one end and extending down the length of the pipe. Space holes about 6 inches apart at the top of the pipe, 3 inches apart in the middle of the pipe and only 1 inch apart at the bottom of the pipe.
Insert the 1-inch-diameter pipe inside the larger PVC planter pipe. The end with holes spaced 1 inch apart goes in the bottom of the planter and the end with wider spacing goes at the top. The smaller pipe down the center helps ensure even moisture to the bottom of the vertical planter.
Hold the 1-inch irrigation pipe in the center while you fill the space around it with potting soil. You can use a bagged potting mix or make your own blend, such as equal parts sphagnum peat, organic compost and coarse sand.
